Day 1
Arrive in Anchorage where you will spend two nights. You are at leisure to explore the city and could visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center and Eklutna Indian Village.
Day 2
Either spend some more time in the city, or take a side trip to Matanuska Glacier, to Seward for a Kenai Fjords National Park cruise or to Whittier for a sea-kayaking trip.
Day 3
Take the Glenn Highway, in the shadow of the Chugach Mountains, through rustic villages such as Glennallen, Gakona and Christochina. You may spot eagles, black bear and Dall sheep en-route. Overnight for one night in Tok.
Day 4
Following the Alaska Highway, you will enter Canada's Yukon Territory, skirting the Kluane Range of the St Elias Mountains. Kluane National Park contains several extensive icefields and glaciers. Overnight for three nights in Whitehorse.
Day 5 & 6
At leisure in the Whitehorse area to explore this frontier town, with native art and craft shops, Old Log Church, McBride Museum and much more. Take a cruise on the Yukon River through historic Miles Canyon, to see the Whitehorse Rapids, a route once taken by tens of thousands of Gold Rush stampeders.
Day 7
Whitehorse to Dawson City, approx. 330 miles. The Klondike Highway will take you into the central Yukon. You will catch glimpses of the mighty Yukon River, and may have the opportunity to spot bear, wolves, lynx or moose in the traditional huntin grounds of the Kaska Indians. The very origin of the Gold Rush is along this route. Overnight for two nights in Dawson City.
Day 8
At leisure to explore this historic Gold Rush town. Many original buildings have stood the test of time and others have been faithfully restored. Tour the historic landmarks and surrounding goldfields, and even try your luck panning for gold at an authentic, working gold claim. Experience some Gold Rush-era entertainment tonight at the Grand Palace Theatre or Diamond Tooth Gertie's Gambling Hall.
Day 9
Dawson City to Fairbanks, approx. 355 miles. Head west today along the Top-of-the-World Highway, which crosses back into the Alaska at Little Gold Camp, the highest border crossing between Canada and the United States. The scenic journey continues on the Alaska Highway and past some magnificent alpine vistas and barren jagged mountains. Overnight for two nights in Fairbanks, the hub of Alaska's interior.
Day 10
At leisure to learn about the city's Gold Rush history. Take a sternwheeler cruise on the Chena and Tanana Rivers past deserted cabins, native settlements and Indian River Village, or visit Cripple Creek, a restored ghost town of frontier buildings. Short trips to Fort Yukon, inside the Arctic Circle are available.
Day 11
Fairbanks to Denali National Park, approx. 165 miles. Today's route takes you along the Parks Highway. Alaska's interior offers excellent opportunities for hiking, canoeing and fishing against a backdrop of towering mountains, wide valleys, roaring rivers and rippling strams. Overnight for two nights at Denali National Park.
Day 12
Take a guided tour of the park today and discover some of its abundant wildlife and cultural history. Weather permitting you will have great views of majestic Mount McKinley, and may see moose, caribou, grizzly bears and Dall sheep. You can also explore the park on your own, perhaps taking some of the hiking trails or renting a bike. Helicopter sightseeing and whitewater rafting are also available.
Day 13
Denali National Park to Anchorage, approx. 235 miles. The final leg of your journey brings you back south to Anchorage. The dense forests and high peaks of the north give way to the lush Matanuska River Balley, the richest agricultural region in Alaska. Here the 20 hour summer days produce giant vegetables. Overnight in Anchorage.
Day 14
Depart from Anchorage.
