The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), will unveil a major reinstallation of its 18th-century Art of the Americas galleries on 19 June 2026, just in time for the 250th anniversary of American independence. The refreshed displays will explore how artists shaped this pivotal era, presenting both celebrated favourites and rarely seen works from one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of American art. Spanning monumental to miniature pieces across all media, the galleries will debut during the MFA’s annual Juneteenth open house, launching a two-day ‘America at 250’ celebration with special programmes on resistance, liberty and revolution. This marks the first reinstallation of the Art of the Americas wing’s first level since its 2010 opening. In the 15 years since, the galleries have become among the Museum’s most visited, while scholarship and collecting have expanded to embrace works from across North, Central and South America, including Indigenous and island nations. In the lead-up to 2026, the MFA will join the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism’s ‘Museums 250’ initiative, which celebrates key Revolutionary War milestones, from the first shots at Lexington and Concord in April 1775 to the Battle of Bunker Hill in June 1775. Starting in May 2025, objects from or reflecting the spirit of the Revolution will be marked with special ‘MA250’ labels through January 2026, when the galleries close for transformation.
