In 2026, the nation will commemorate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and there is no better place to honour that legacy than Boston: the very cradle of the American Revolution. Throughout 2025 and 2026, visitors and residents alike can immerse themselves in a wide array of events, from vivid re-enactments of revolutionary moments to museum exhibitions, parades, lectures and interactive tours. Whether you are walking the Freedom Trail, attending a patriotic concert on the Common or witnessing history come alive at Faneuil Hall, Boston will be the beating heart of the anniversary festivities.

FIFA World Cup 2026

Boston’s passion for sport will reach new heights in the summer of 2026 as Gillette Stadium welcomes the FIFA World Cup. Known as the home of Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution and the six-time Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, the stadium is no stranger to hosting world-class competitions. This time, however, it will be football taking centre stage. Fans from across the globe will gather for thrilling matches on 13, 16, 19, 23, 26 and 29 June, with a quarter final game on 9 July. The atmosphere promises to be electric, with international supporters bringing colour, music and energy to the stands. For both die-hard football fans and curious newcomers, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness the world’s greatest players compete for football glory in New England.

Sail Boston 2026

From 11 to 16 July 2026, the waters of Boston Harbour will once again be transformed into a stunning maritime stage for Sail Boston®. This beloved event brings together majestic tall ships from ports around the globe for a week of breathtaking sights and nautical celebration. Tour the ships, meet the crews and watch spectacular sailing displays that recall a golden age of seafaring. Crews and cadets from dozens of nations will converge to share their cultures and passion for the sea, while onshore festivities feature live music, food and family friendly activities. Recognised by Tall Ships America as Port of the Year in both 2009 and 2017, Boston has earned a reputation as one of the world’s most welcoming and vibrant hosts for this international tradition. In 2026, the return of the tall ships will be an unmissable highlight of the city’s summer.

Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon, the world’s oldest annually contested marathon and one of six World Marathon Majors, returns on Patriots’ Day, 21 April, drawing thousands of runners and half a million spectators along its legendary 26.2-mile course from Hopkinton to Boston. From the lively cheers of Wellesley College to the grit-testing Newton Hills and the electric finish on Boylston Street, there are countless excellent viewing spots, including Cleveland Circle, Coolidge Corner and the wide-open stretches leading into the city. Local venues are joining the celebration with special Marathon Monday openings and menus, from Rochambeau’s early-morning brunch to Back Bay Social’s outdoor patio specials, Bistro du Midi’s charity ‘finish line’ cocktail and The Lenox Hotel’s all-day service. As the Boston Athletic Association marks 250 years since its inspiration from the 1896 Olympic Games, the race’s storied history continues to shine, from John J. McDermott’s inaugural 1897 victory, to Roberta Gibb and Kathrine Switzer breaking barriers for women runners, to the introduction of the wheelchair division in 1975, cementing Boston as the pinnacle of marathon running.

First Night Boston

Get ready to ring in 2026 at First Night Boston, a beloved New Year’s Eve tradition since 1976! This year’s celebration promises a full day of artistic performances, dazzling ice sculptures and family friendly entertainment throughout the city. The festivities kick off at 12:00 with the Family Festival at City Hall Plaza, featuring live performances and interactive experiences for all ages. From 12:00 to 16:30, Boston comes alive with shows at City Hall, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the Rose Kennedy Greenway and beyond. The excitement continues with the 18:00 First Night Parade, followed by family fireworks at 19:00 on Boston Common. Music lovers can enjoy the First Night Party on the Plaza at 20:00, featuring back-to-back performances including headliner STL Gold. As midnight approaches, the city will gather at City Hall Plaza for the countdown and light show, culminating in breathtaking harbour fireworks over Boston’s skyline to welcome 2026 in spectacular fashion. Head of the Charles Regatta

Get ready for an unforgettable weekend on the Charles River at the 2025 Head of the Charles Regatta, happening 17–19 October! Celebrating 60 years of rowing excellence, this world-famous three-day regatta will welcome over 11,000 rowers from around the globe. But the excitement isn’t just for competitors, spectators of all ages can dive into the action with plenty of ways to enjoy the event. For breathtaking views in a relaxed setting, visit the Eliot Bridge Enclosure; for delicious local food and exclusive Regatta merchandise, stop by the Weld Exhibition; and for a lively, festive atmosphere, head to Reunion Village, where alumni and fans cheer on their favourite teams. Don’t miss the Rowing and Fitness Expo at the finish line to test your skills or browse unique vendors. To make your visit smooth, take advantage of public transport or complementary shuttles, as parking is limited, and parts of Memorial Drive will be closed during race weekend. Museum of Fine Arts: Art of the Americas Galleries

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), will unveil a major reinstallation of its 18th-century Art of the Americas galleries on 19 June 2026, just in time for the 250th anniversary of American independence. The refreshed displays will explore how artists shaped this pivotal era, presenting both celebrated favourites and rarely seen works from one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of American art. Spanning monumental to miniature pieces across all media, the galleries will debut during the MFA’s annual Juneteenth open house, launching a two-day ‘America at 250’ celebration with special programmes on resistance, liberty and revolution. This marks the first reinstallation of the Art of the Americas wing’s first level since its 2010 opening. In the 15 years since, the galleries have become among the Museum’s most visited, while scholarship and collecting have expanded to embrace works from across North, Central and South America, including Indigenous and island nations. In the lead-up to 2026, the MFA will join the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism’s ‘Museums 250’ initiative, which celebrates key Revolutionary War milestones, from the first shots at Lexington and Concord in April 1775 to the Battle of Bunker Hill in June 1775. Starting in May 2025, objects from or reflecting the spirit of the Revolution will be marked with special ‘MA250’ labels through January 2026, when the galleries close for transformation.

Dine Out Boston

Dine Out Boston offers you the perfect opportunity to discover why Boston is one of the culinary capitals of the world. This twice-yearly event by Meet Boston, in partnership with participating restaurants, features prix fixe menus at multiple price points for lunch and dinner. The summer edition will take place from 3–16 August 2026. Participating restaurants offer lunch and/or dinner options at four different price points, excluding tax and gratuities. No passes, tickets or coupons are required, simply visit one of the participating restaurants and ask for the Dine Out Boston menu. Reservations are strongly encouraged. Some restaurants may offer the Dine Out Boston menu as a takeaway option.

Knox Trail 250

Mark your calendars for Knox Trail 250, a historic commemoration leading up to the bicentenary of the Declaration of Independence on 4 July 2026. This special programme honours the legendary Henry Knox Noble Train of Artillery of 1776, a pivotal journey that played a key role in what is now celebrated in Massachusetts as Evacuation Day. The event will kick off on the morning of 10 January 2026 along the Massachusetts–New York border with a ceremony symbolising the official Knox handoff, mirroring the historic December event. From Great Barrington through more than 33 towns in Massachusetts and New York, a sequenced celebration will highlight the historic route with designated hubs showcasing local heritage. Town managers, local historians and community members will join in this unique parade of regional recognition, honouring the trailblazing spirit of Knox.
