Culinary Institute of America

The Culinary Institute of America plays a central role in Dutchess County’s food culture. Graduates of the college work in some of the finest restaurants around the world, and many can be found across the county. Founded in 1946, the Culinary Institute of America has set the standard for excellence in professional culinary education. Its main campus in Hyde Park is celebrated for its distinguished alumni and beautiful surroundings. Condé Nast Traveler recently recognised the Hyde Park campus as one of the 50 most beautiful college campuses in America. A partnership between Brooklyn Brewery and the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park led to the creation of The Brewery at the CIA. With flagship brands including Cleaver IPA and Mise en Place Wit, the brewery supports culinary education while producing award winning student created beers. The microbrewery was named New York State Brewery of the Year in 2019. Its beers are available in CIA Hyde Park restaurants, at the Post Road Brew House, The Tavern and at The Egg in the student centre, which is open to the public when school is in session.

Pick Your Own

Hudson Valley agriculture is central to the character and economy of Dutchess County. Generations of family-owned farms produce high quality fruit, vegetables and artisan goods. Throughout the year, enjoy a pick your own experiences and shop at farm stands filled with fresh seasonal produce. Each season offers something different. In spring, you may find asparagus, strawberries and early greens. Summer brings soft fruits, tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, and flowers. In autumn, the harvest includes apples, grapes, pears, plums, pumpkins and sunflowers. Some farms continue apple picking into November, depending on weather conditions, so it is best to check before visiting. For fresh local produce and speciality foods, visit Adams Fairacre Farms, Beacon Natural Market and Taste of NY Market at Todd Hill, along with many other locations across the county. You can also explore farms such as Fishkill Farms and Meadowbrook Farm, all set within Dutchess County’s scenic countryside.

Breweries

Dutchess County is home to some of the finest craft beer in the Hudson Valley. Visit breweries including Plan Bee Farm Brewery and Sloop Brewing Company, or download the Craft Beverage Trail Map to help plan your journey. At Black Snake Brewing Company, enjoy an IPA or ale while taking in views at Old Adriance Farm in Staatsburg. Play giant games, visit the goats or relax in the barn with handcrafted pretzels, gourmet hot dogs or barbecue. Wine and seasonal cocktails are also available. Jordan Homestead Farm Brewery opened in autumn 2023 and produces a variety of styles including session ales, saisons and low alcohol beers. Ingredients such as barley from Greig Farm and seasonal fruit from local farms are used in speciality releases, creating flavours rooted in the region. Plan Bee Farm Brewery offers a true field to glass experience using ingredients grown in New York State, many from the farm itself. Tour the farm, relax in the tasting room or enjoy outdoor spaces while sampling wild, farmhouse and sour beers inspired by local hops, grains, fruit and herbs. Food trucks are available at weekends.

Wine and Culinary Tours

On the Dutchess County Wine Trail, spend a day exploring wineries and cideries across the region. Visit Millbrook Vineyards & Winery, a 130-acre estate, or Treasury Cider at Fishkill Farms. Road signs guide you between award winning wineries including Clinton Vineyards in Clinton Corners, Milea Estate Vineyard in Staatsburg and Millbrook Vineyards & Winery in Millbrook. America 250

As the United States marks 250 years in 2026, Dutchess County continues its commemoration of the nation’s semiquincentennial with RevCon 2026. This annual Revolutionary War reenactment and history fair, hosted by the Dutchess County Department of History, will take place on 13 June 2026 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park. The event offers an engaging way to experience living history in a significant landmark setting.

Historic Sites

Dutchess County offers a remarkable journey through American history. From early Quaker settlements and the Revolutionary War to the Gilded Age and the era of the Roosevelts, explore grand estates, landscaped gardens and fascinating museums. Highlights include Bannerman Castle on Pollepel Island, accessible by boat, where you can enjoy guided or self-guided tours and seasonal events. At Bard College, the Montgomery Place estate offers sweeping views, historic architecture and beautifully maintained grounds. In Hyde Park, the home of Eleanor Roosevelt at the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site provides insight into her life and legacy. Nearby, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum brings the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt to life through immersive exhibits and historic artefacts. Outdoor Pursuits

In Dutchess County, enjoying the outdoors is a way of life. With more than 75 trail systems and nearly 200 parks, there are many opportunities to reconnect with nature. From scenic walks and relaxed rides along rail trails to journeys through farmland and mountain biking adventures, the landscape of the Hudson River Valley provides a beautiful setting for every activity. Whether your ideal day includes a gentle outing on a rail trail, a ride through countryside scenery or an energetic mountain bike experience, Dutchess County has something for everyone. Cyclists will find a wide range of services, including bike rental shops, repair centres and equipment stores, as well as bicycle parking locations across the county. You can explore the trails at the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail or the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, all of which showcase some of the finest scenery in upstate New York. If you prefer digital maps, visit Ride with GPS or Strava to plan your routes. Bring your bike, put on your walking boots and set out for an outdoor adventure in upstate New York. There is plenty to explore in Dutchess County. You can walk sections of the Appalachian Trail, climb to the top of Ferncliff Forest or visit the impressive rock formation at Dover Stone Church. Outdoor recreation in the county also includes horse riding, golf, kayaking, archery and skeet shooting. Golf enthusiasts will find a variety of courses throughout the area. Dutchess County is home to several grand estates along the Hudson River and throughout the countryside. Visit Clermont State Historic Site in Germantown for mansion tours, formal gardens and seasonal events. In Esopus, explore Edgewater on selected days for guided tours of its elegant interiors and river views. In Staatsburg, Mills Mansion within Mills Norrie State Park offers Beaux Arts architecture, riverside trails and sweeping views. In Hyde Park, the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site features formal gardens and scenic paths. Explore the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum and the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site. Further north in Rhinebeck, Wilderstein Historic Site offers mansion tours and historic grounds. In Amenia, Wethersfield Estate & Garden provides seasonal tours, gardens and carriage collections. Together, these estates offer guided tours, exhibitions, gardens and special events throughout the year.
